Found in Orange County, Brea is an affluent city with over 39,280 residents as of the 2010 census. It got its start in the oil industry, producing crude oil from several local wells. It later became a center for citrus production, like many other California cities, and is currently a famous retail center because of its large shopping center, the Brea Mall. The recently developed Brea Downtown area is also a favorite shopping destination for locals and visitors from around the area. The city is also known for its famed public art program, a program by which many other cities base their public art programs. Today over 140 artworks are placed throughout the city. Sunset magazine chose Brea as one of the 5 best suburbs to live in the western U.S. as of early 2006.
