A city of Los Angeles County, Whittier is found about 12 miles southeast Los Angeles. Home to over 85,330 residents, Whittier encompasses an area of 14,7 square miles. It is one of the Gateway Cities, along with nearby Montebello. Incorporate February of 1898, it became a charter city in the year 1955. Whittier is named after poet John Greenleaf Whittier. The city is also home to Whittier College and a considerable portion of its residents are students. The city got its first economic boot from the citrus industry and other types of farming. It was a major producer of Pampas grass and was for a time the largest walnut grower in the country.
